I used the form of the cube as the basis of Healing because it so strongly references built objects, and I wanted to take a built object and turn into something alive. I was experiencing loss due to the end of a year-long relationship, so I built it with pieces missing; a corner, an edge. The broken edges are rounded off, like bones partially healed. Then I used the wire and twine structures to start to heal the cube. Each tendril reaches towards the missing corner, trying to adapt, the pointy ends of the wire still raw. The twine binds the tendrils to their roots and reinforces the corners. Twine wrapping is a process that I learned aboard the tall ship Bark Europa. The process is repetitive and highly physical, requiring a great deal of tension, but at the same time it is quite meditative and tender. It is extremely effective in binding and securing rope and protecting rope and cable from the elements. The finished piece is satisfying to touch, warm and strong.
